Repurposed shipping containers, all you need to know...an E-book

Did you know that shipping containers are not just used for transporting goods from place to place across the world?

This e-book offers information to answer your questions about shipping containers

and what you will want to know to make a smart, informed buying decision.

Shipping containers are used for several years and then they are available to be sold as a solution to storage needs across the nation.  In recent years, shipping containers have been in great demand, as people use their creativity and find some awesome ways to repurpose storage units into tiny homes, cabins in the woods, she sheds, he sheds, business offices or outdoor kitchens and of course, the traditional motorcycle garage or garden shed when storage space has become scarce.

Shipping containers are a safe and economical purchase with varied sizes and prices available to suit almost any need.

We will explore the following:

What is a shipping container?

Shipping containers, also referred to as Conex containers and are large, steel boxes designed to transport goods by sea or land. They have traditionally been used to carry and transport cargo via ship or train. Steel shipping containers originated in the 1950s when commercial shipping operators and the U.S. military started to develop them. They were named Container Express and abbreviated Conex. The name Conex is now used universally and companies selling shipping containers refer to them as Conex boxes.  Shipping containers are found in ports, stacked high on container ships and transported across the world. Used shipping containers for resale are stored in depot yards across the United States and buyers can either pick up their purchased shipping container or have it delivered to a business or home location by a transporter delivery service.

Shipping containers offer durability, resistance to all kinds of weather, as well as security, making them suitable for various projects.

What makes a good shipping container?

Good shipping containers are a rodent free solution to your storage needs.

They are made from high-strength steel.  A good shipping container will be in like new or very good condition.  New and used storage units are available at varying degrees of wear.  A good unit will always have no leaks and good air tight seals.  Known as WWT (win and water tight), their durability and weather-resistance make them ideal for storage. They will have air vents and good solid floors.  Cosmetically, they may have some surface rust and missing paint from several years of use and being exposed to the elements previously. New units are units that have been used for only one trip.

If you want the best unit, buy a one-trip shipping container because they are newer and understandably basically show no wear.

How is a shipping container made?

Shipping containers are constructed from Corten steel, Corrugated steel, Marine grade plywood and Crossmembers.

Corten steel is an alloy of steel and other metals. It's also known as weathering steel because it's designed to rust when exposed to the elements and then forms a protective layer that prevents further rusting. Corten steel is weldable and rust-resistant, making it ideal for shipping containers that are often exposed to bad weather.
Corrugated steel means it's folded into a wave-like pattern. This process makes the steel stronger and more rigid without adding extra weight.
Marine-grade plywood forms a layer of strong plywood that's attached to the steel floor beams. The wood is treated with chemicals to make it safer and more durable.
Cross members are beams that are attached to the bottom side rail. The space between the cross members prevents moisture from getting into the container from underneath.

What are the available sizes and styles and colors of shipping containers?

Shipping containers come in many colors.  Choosing a color is not usually necessary, as the shipping units are sold so quickly that it isn't always a good idea to have to wait for a certain color to arrive at the depot closest to you. Still, if you must have a certain color, a request may be made, with the knowledge that it may take a longer time for delivery to take place.

The most popular shipping container sizes are 20 ft.  40 ft.  and 40 ft. HC. They are 8 ft. wide and can be standard height of 8 ft. 6 in. or high cube which are one foot taller at 9 ft. 6 in.  They have a weight of around 6,000 to 7,500 pounds.

With an abundance of shipping container companies making promises to customers these days,

it is important to explore this question.

What makes a good shipping container company?

A good shipping company is a successful company. A good shipping company develops a trusting relationship with the customer from the very first point of contact and does follow up to make sure that the customer is satisfied and informed throughout the purchasing process. A good shipping company has transparency, necessary knowledge, and a desire to have a happy customer experience.  There is no need to worry about falling victim to a scam operation when you are working with a good shipping container company.

And finally, we need to discuss you, the shipping container buyer/customer.

What makes a happy customer?

A happy customer is one who receives a rock solid and honest transaction with a positive experience from start to finish.

A happy customer receives transparency, knowing that his/her money is well spent and there won't be any surprises in the process.

A happy customer receives good communication throughout the entire purchase process!

In the end, a happy customer is happy to share their buying experience with others through word of mouth or through online reviews.

A happy customer is a repeat customer, knowing that they are appreciated and the quality of the product and service they received

are proof of that.

A happy customer is a smile on delivery day, as their need is fulfilled or a dream comes true!
